One bed to rule them all

We bought Crockett a new dog bed. We thought we were doing the right thing. His previous bed was something he absolutely loved...and as a result, it was smelly, flattened from use, and covered in hair. No amount of washing was helping the bed, so we did something that I am kind of embarrassed to even admit: we upgraded him.

Orvis sells these ridiculously amazing-looking dog beds, and so Mike and I will often check out the Orvis website to see if any of these beds are ever on sale. And wonder of wonders, the deluxe double bolster bed went on clearance. Like, 50% off. How could we resist? The dog in the advertisement just looks so...comfortable.

So a few days ago, we caved. And yesterday when I came home from school, a mammoth of a box was waiting for me on the front porch. I made a big fuss bringing the box inside, hoping that Crockett could somehow understand that his naps and sleeps were about to be taken to a whole new level of comfort. I don't think the message sunk in.
The HUGE box should have come with a red flag.
When Mike got home, we opened the box together, and let me say, the picture of the peaceful golden retriever napping does not do this bed justice. IT WAS HUGE. No. It was colossal, gigantic, enormous. Words cannot describe this bed. It could easily fit both Mike and myself, while we tried to coax Crockett to come check out his new digs. I think he was afraid of it.
Unloading the bed from its box...at this point, I don't think we truly realized the hugeness of our situation.
Crockett looks on, unsure of what he is supposed to do.
Holy huge bed!
As dog beds go, would you consider this excessive?
Normally we let Crockett roam the house at night, and he kind of sleeps wherever he wants, and  usually, he opts for the guest bedroom. Last night we closed the door and placed Cyclops Bed at the foot of our bed in order to force him to enjoy his new bed. Titanic Bed easily took up the remaining floor space in our room. What once looked spa-like and spacious was now cramped and ridiculous. Planetary Bed practically dwarfed our king-sized bed.  (By the way, the new found fascination with his crate is a thing of the past...we have come to terms with the fact that our dog is more human than canine, and prefers the guest queen-sized bed to his crate. Oh well, can't win em all. And if you are a guest of ours, or plan to be, don't worry...I keep the bed covered with a blanket and wash the sheets before your arrival...and Crockett will not sleep with you if you come to visit. Unless you want him to, which I'm sure he would oblige.)
Looking comfy in the Cyclops Bed.
So this morning, after much deliberation (and seriously, "much" is an understatement: to keep the bed or to return the bed has dominated our conversation for the past 24 hours...) we have decided to return Behemoth Bed to Orvis for a full refund. The decision was not an easy one. With the refund, we will be able to purchase a more modest dog bed like the one he had before, and ALSO be able to treat ourselves to a movie AND a steak dinner at the fanciest place in town.

Life is about choices. Crazy as we may seem for our purchase, at least we have the sense to send Gigantor back where he came from. Spoil our dog? Yes, guilty as charged. But in our defense, our king sized bed was purchased prior to the Mammoth...so at least we've got our priorities straight.
